Historical Theory raises diverse reactions amongst both history lecturers and history students. I am going to consider options, and argue for a full-on compulsory class for undergraduates (and graduate students if they need it). I've started, taught and led such a class in three different Scottish universities since the mid 1990s - one class reaching 273 students simultaneously by Zoom in the midst of COVID. I survived! Just. Come and consider my suggestions and offer your reactions.
Callum Brown retired in 2023 after 43 years as history lecturer, reader and professor. I wrote the longest PhD thesis in the recorded history of University of Glasgow (founded 1451), prompting the first-ever word limit. Since then, I have written 13 research monographs, and have just finished another. When I'm bored, I write. Retirement is only fun if I can work.
