ERC evaluation: An inside view

The process to apply for personal ERC grants is quite different from what most researchers are used to, such as the grants from the Research Council of Finland. One application – two parts – two-stage evaluation including a video interview in Step 2. In this talk I will demystify the process as an “insider”, having experience as a member of an ERC CoG evaluation panel. I will describe the full evaluation process – Step 1 and Step 2 – and give my opinion on what a “winning” application should look like. Recently, there have been some significant changes in the evaluation criteria that also reflect on the content of the two-part application. I will discuss those as well, so hopefully the talk will be useful whether you are a first-time or more experienced applicant at any of the ERC levels – StG, CoG, AdvG.
