Nanoscience with diatoms and brown algae
Thomas Fuhrmann-Lieker
University of Kassel, Germany
Diatoms and brown algae are related but differ in the structure of their cell wall. However, both architectures offer interesting nanostructured materials. It will be shown how we use biosilica, saccharide biopolymers and polyphenols in various applications, and how biological clocks have to be considered in using natural resources.
As addendum we will rise the question about the status of nanoscience as a scientific discipline of its own.
