Welcome to the guest lecture of Prof. Eero Ropo entitled Reimagining Learning – School Curricula for the Future.

This presentation examines the need to rethink education and curriculum development in response to rapid societal and technological change. Key challenges include the proliferation of competing social and cultural narratives, the exponential growth of information in technology-mediated environments, the need to support increasingly individualized learning pathways and identities, and growing pressures to demonstrate educational impact. The presentation highlights a shift from viewing learners as consumers of knowledge to empowering them as critical navigators of information, while recognizing the expanding role of artificial intelligence in learning. It further explores what knowledge is most valuable for the future and how education can foster personal, social, cultural, and planetary identities while responding to demands for accountability and workforce readiness.

Eero Ropo, Ph.D., is a professor of education (emeritus, 2020–), specializing in teacher education, learning research and curriculum studies since 1996 at Tampere University, Finland. He has been as a visiting scholar at the University of Pittsburgh (1984–85), Texas Tech University (1992–93) and Vanderbilt University (1996, 1997). In 2015–17 he worked as the head of the MA program in teacher education in Aceh, Indonesia. From 2016 until 2020 he worked as a part-time professor at the Nord University, Norway, and in 2022 as a visiting professor at the Indonesian University of Education (UPI), Bandung, Indonesia. Currently (2026) he is involved in an EU project on developing teacher allocation in South Africa. Ropo pursues research on narrativity in education, learning and identity, and curriculum theory.
