The Department of History and Ethnology has a separate International Programme for exchange students that are majoring in History in their home Universities. Please notice that all courses in the International Programme are not available every year, they vary.

Languages (major and minor students)
At the Department of Language and Communication Studies we offer language studies for those students who already have good language skills in the language in question. You may take our courses if you are studying a certain language as a major or minor subject at your home university and you are accepted on the Department of Language and Communication Studies.
NB. If you are not a language student select your language courses at the Movi programme. Elementary and intermediate language courses aimed for all other exchange students are offered by the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi).

Finnish Language and Finnish Language and Culture courses 2025-26
• Courses are open to exchange students who possess high enough Finnish skills for participating in the courses with Finnish native speakers.

Finnish Sign Language - no courses offered during autumn semester 2025
• Courses are only open for exchange students coming through the Erasmus+ agreements of Finnish Sign Language, that is from the following universities: Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Universität Hamburg, and Stockholms universitet.
• Access to courses will be negotiated course by course so please contact us for more information on available courses.

English courses are open only to students coming within the exchange agreements of the English Section, that is from the following universities: Université Catholique de Louvain, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universität Mannheim, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and University of Limerick.
• NB. Students accepted at other subjects should choose English courses offered by the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi). MOVI courses offered can be found at Study guide: Studies open for all exchange students of JYU
• If there are places on our English courses, we may be able to take to our courses some extra students who study English as their major/minor subject at their home university and are coming through
o bilateral agreements from outside Europe
o Erasmus agreements of other languages of the Department of Language and Communication Studies
o Erasmus/bilateral agreements of the Faculty of Education and Psychology

Summer School in Human Sciences
Exchange students staying for a year or a spring semester may also apply for the Summer School in Human Sciences. The Summer School runs from late May to early June.
How to look for courses on SISU
Descriptions and timetables of courses are available in the study data system SISU.
If you are not yet a registered student at JYU, continue your course search without logging in and write the course code in the search field. The results can be filtered, for example, according to the academic year and the language of instruction.
