Guidelines for scientific editors of JYU Dissertations
This page provides guidance to support the work of the scientific editor of the JYU Dissertations doctoral thesis series in reviewing a dissertation manuscript for the granting of publication permission. The page is maintained by the Open Science Centre publishing services.
Table of contents
Accessibility
- Taking accessibility into account in dissertations is a statutory requirement.
- The dissertation must use the official template. The template can be downloaded from the Publishing Services website, or, if necessary, requested from the publishing services.
- The LaTeX template should be used only if there is a clear, content-based justification (for example, extensive mathematical formulas).
- LaTeX users must include at least a table of contents in the PDF file. Those using the LaTeX template are also encouraged to submit the source code to the publishing services.
- Do the tables and figures have alternative texts? If the content is described in the main text, the alternative text can be, for example, “Figure xx, referred to in the text.”
- Tables must be created as text-based elements; they must not be inserted into the document as images.
- It is also recommended to provide alternative text for tables.
- The font size in tables must remain readable even if the document is reduced to B5 book size in possible printing.
- Large and complex tables can be included in the JYX publication archive as separate files alongside the dissertation. They do not have to be embedded in the dissertation file itself.
Articles and manuscripts
- Each article included in the dissertation must be submitted to the publishing office, including unpublished manuscripts. Unpublished manuscripts may be excluded from the online JYX version of the dissertation.
- Articles must be submitted to the publishing services as separate files (Word, PDF). They must not be embedded in the Word document as images.
- Article/manuscript titles: are they presented consistently and in the same form in all places (e.g. in the list of articles and on the articles’ cover pages)?
General issues related to the template
- Check that the page size and margins remain consistent throughout the work.
- Check that all required sections are included in the manuscript.
- Check that the dissertation includes both an English and a Finnish abstract.
- In the Finnish abstract, the dissertation title must also be given in Finnish.
- The recommended length of abstracts is approximately 2,200 characters (including publication details and keywords), with a maximum of one page. A summary placed at the end of the dissertation has no maximum length.
- Check the placement of table and figure captions: the caption for a table is placed above the table; the caption for a figure or image is placed below the figure. A caption is not the same as alternative text.
- Because layout settings may change slightly during the finalization process, the text should not contain internal references to page numbers, but rather, for example, to chapter numbers.
- The author may use the citation style established in their discipline.
- If a source has a DOI, it must be included in the reference list as a hyperlink, i.e. at least underlined and preferably in blue.
