Internship instructions

Table of contents

Internship may be your way to valuable work experience either in Finland or abroad. The international degree students are recommended to plan an internship for the summer time (May-August) to avoid any delay in their studies.

Getting an Internship

1. Find an internship: best done by directly looking into possible businesses!

The best way of getting an internship in the field of IT is to  contact possible employers directly. Most businesses have open recruitment forms/ careers section on their website, for prospective employees or trainees. Leave an application. Further advice on job hunting is available!

There are also internship programmes abroad available, but those are often quite competed and may or may not be paid or can even carry a fee.

2. Get the internship approved by the staff responsible for internships

When you have initially negotiated the internship with the employer, a confirmation is required for the content of the internship and the number of credits to be accrued from the person responsible for the internship in your programme. After this, you can sign an internship agreement. After the internship, you will be required to submit an internship report to the teacher.

3. Inform the International Coordinator of your internship abroad

Your International Coordinator can advise you on applying for (additional) funding for the internship if it is located abroad. Even if you are an international student, you are not doing an international internship if the internship takes place in Finland.

4. Money matters

Most internships in the field of IT are paid a salary and that is why students are recommended to find an internship independently.

For internships abroad (outside of Finland) there are grants available: if the internship provider does not pay a salary or the salary is under c. 1000€/ month, you can apply for Erasmus+ funding for internships in Europe (not in Finland) or JYU's grant for internships outside Europe.

Academic credit for prior work experience

If you have worked in a demanding specialist job in the field of IT, and gained job expertise relevant to the learning outcomes of your Master's programme, you may be awarded academic credits for this work retrospectively. These credits can be included as part of the Master’s degree.
