The internship subsidy at the Department of chemistry

The Department of Chemistry supports its students' internships during the academic year.

Unfortunately, due to the tight financial situation, the Department of Chemistry will not be able to offer internship subsidy in 2025.

*******************

Degree students at the Department of Chemistry who have completed a Bachelor's degree can receive internship support from the department for working in the department's research group. Due to low demand in previous years, no internship subsidy will be granted in 2023 for work with an employer outside the university.

The internship subsidy is intended to be used during the period of study, i.e. the student must have a valid study permit at least until the end of the internship. Internships can also be credited, but only if the internship is not part of a thesis or other coursework. The internship subsidy can only be used once during the studies and the criterion for the internship subsidy is a Bachelor's degree in chemistry (or a Bachelor's degree for those selected directly for a Master's programme), meaning that the Bachelor's degree must have been completed in full by the end of the application period. For students directly admitted to a Master's programme, the degree on which the student has been selected is considered to be the base degree.

Working in the department's research group

The department offers four students the opportunity to work in one of the department's research groups for up to 3 months as a research assistant. The internships are aimed specifically at students who are pursuing an academic or research career. Applications for internships must be submitted via an online application form by 15 February 2023, accompanied by a letter of motivation without the applicant's name. At the application stage, students will not be allocated to a specific research group, but will negotiate themselves which research group they will join. The internship may be directed towards the experimental part of the master's thesis, if agreed with the supervisor. The research assistant will be paid a salary in accordance with the collective agreement, approximately 1700 € per month.

Application form: the deadline for applications was closed 15 February 2023 at 23:59.

Selection criteria:

  • Academic performance (weighted averages of the study modules of the chemistry courses included in the bachelor's degree, or in the undergraduate degree for those admitted to the master's programme).
  • A motivation letter without personal data (describing in particular your plans and objectives for an academic or research career).
  • Duration of studies (completion of a bachelor's degree within the target time will be considered an advantage)

Selection procedure:

  1. The top 6 applicants will be selected mechanically on the basis of their academic performance.
  2. From the top 6 applicants, 4 candidates will be selected on the basis of their motivation letter and the duration of their studies. This selection phase is anonymous.
  3. The four selected candidates will be offered an internship at the department for a maximum of 3 months, and the students themselves will negotiate with the heads of the research groups on which research group they will carry out their internship and the length of the internship.

The Head of the Department has appointed University Lecturer Juhani Huuskonen to carry out the selection.

The selected candidates must complete the negotiations for their internships by 1 April 2023 and inform the education coordinator. Otherwise, they may lose their internship. After 1 April 2023, the internship must be negotiated with the head of the department.

Decisions on the grantees will be made by the end of February and applicants will be informed of the decisions by email.

Due to low demand in previous years, no internship subsidies will be granted in 2023 for work with an employer outside the university.
