Publishing your Master´s thesis

An approved thesis that has been stored in JYX cannot be replaced with a new version. If corrections are discovered after the thesis has been submitted, an errata sheet can be added to the thesis. This errata sheet should list the corrections approved by the thesis supervisor. The errata sheet should be sent to tutkielmat@library.jyu.fi.

Keywords and YSO keywords are important for a thesis. Keywords summarize the core content of your thesis, making it easier to find in information retrieval services. Using YSO keywords (General Finnish Ontology) guarantees the use of consistent and established terms, thereby improving the discoverability and comprehensibility of your thesis for other researchers. Keywords also help connect your work to the broader scientific discourse.

The author of the thesis holds the copyright to their work. This means that the copyright holder has the right to produce copies of the work and make it available to the public. The copyright holder also has the right to be credited whenever their work or part of it is copied or made publicly available, either in whole or in part. It is prohibited to alter the work or make it available to the public in a manner that infringes upon the author's originality or the literary or artistic value of the work. Storing the thesis in JYX  does not affect the copyright, which remains with the author of the thesis.

At the same time, the author of the thesis is responsible for the content and rights to the publication. The author of the thesis to be published must hold full copyright to any images, tables, or other similar materials included in their thesis or have the right to publish such materials online.

Choose a license (CC)

If you wish, you can select a Creative Commons license for your thesis, which allows you to define how others can use your work and users don't need to ask for separate permission from you. Regardless of which option you choose below, you retain the copyright of your work, an your work must always be cited according to good scientific practice. If you don't choose the license, all rights remain with you, and any further use of the thesis requires your permission.

License type

CC BY: This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation.

CC BY-NC-ND: This license is the most restrictive of our six main licenses, only allowing others to download your works and share them with others as long as they credit you, but they can’t change them in any way or use them commercially.

No CC license: You retain all rights to yourself.

A thesis produced in a public educational institution is a public document (Finnish Constitution 12.2 §; Publicity Act 1 §).

The Publicity Act also defines what information must be kept confidential. This includes, for example, documents containing trade or professional secrets, information about endangered plant and animal species, or documents related to a thesis or scientific research plan or primary data, unless it is clear that disclosing such information would not harm the completion, utilization, proper evaluation of the thesis, or the researcher, or the commissioner of the research or development work.

If the thesis contains confidential information, it must be placed in the background material, not in the public thesis itself. 

According to the University of Jyväskylä’s publishing policy, theses are primarily published as fully open in the digital publication archive JYX. 

If the author chooses to publish their thesis with restricted access, certain information remains public. This includes i.e. the author(s) of the thesis, the title of the thesis, the year of publication. 

A thesis with restricted access will also be sent by email upon request.

A thesis is, by default, a public document. At the University of Jyväskylä, theses are stored in the digital publication archive JYX. According to the publishing policy of the University of Jyväskylä, theses are generally published as fully open access. If the author chooses to publish their thesis with restricted access, the author and work information remains public. A thesis with restricted access will be sent by email upon request.

Read the publication agreement carefully before approving it. The agreement defines your rights and obligations as the author of the thesis. The copyright to your thesis remains with you.
