Researcher at the University of Jyväskylä Charlotte Maddinson was nominated to the Expert Group on Nature Credits through her role in the BOOST (Biodiversity offsetting as an operational tool for a just sustainability transition towards no net loss of ecosystems and biodiversity) research consortium which her research group in University of Jyväskylä is a part of.

- I’m excited to help ensure Finland’s voice is heard in EU nature policy development. Being able to influence nature-positive action at the European level is truly meaningful, states Doctoral Researcher Charlotte Maddinson from the University of Jyväskylä.

BOOST research paves the way for nature restoration

Researchers of the BOOST facilitate the mainstreaming and enabling of just transition towards adoption of biodiversity offsets in Finland and globally.

- BOOST’s leadership in biodiversity offsetting and crediting was a major factor in my appointment. I also have some experience with biodiversity credits and offsets as part of my PhD research, and involvement in the Nature Positive Research Group at the University of Oxford, explains Maddinson.

Sharing Finland’s best practice

The aim of Nature Credits is to strengthen biodiversity, create new income opportunities for landowners, and direct private investment toward nature restoration and conservation. The Working Group will contribute to developing the Nature Credits Roadmap, which was designed to reward nature-positive action and mobilize private finance.

- As part of this role, I will share best practices developed in BOOST and across Finland, ensuring strong representation and knowledge exchange at the EU level, says Maddinson.

The position is for 5 years although it will be highly dependent on how the Nature Credits policy develops.

The University of Jyväskylä congratulates Charlotte and the BOOST team on their  achievement!
