High school students will make gold, examine mold and radiation damages in physics competition

High school students from five different schools around Finland will join a competition at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä (JYFL-ACCLAB). Teams from Jyväskylän Lyseo, Helsingin kielilukio, Karhulan lukio (Kotka), Kimpisen lukio (Lappeenranta) and Sammon keskuslukio (Tampere) will perform their experiments in the laboratory in March.

The experiments will be conducted with the help and supervision of researchers (tutors) employing the K-130 cyclotron and Pelletron accelerator. In March we will see e.g, how you can make gold at laboratory, is the mold taken from nature different to mold bought from garden store and how you can examine radiation damages.

“The teams seem to be very well motivated and students already know a lot physics, we were happy to notice”, says Janne Pakarinen, who is coordinating the competition.
