Liu was pleased to receive the recognition: “This is such a pleasure. Everyone’s research sounded so interesting. I feel this isn’t about competition, but rather an opportunity to learn how to advertise your research to others in an engaging manner.”

The international final will take place in Dijon, France in November. Liu received excellent feedback from the jury for her engaging performance. She noted that there is still preparation to be done for the final competition: “I’m going to keep practising. I’m keen to hear from the experts how I can improve my presentation and how to, for example, make it more entertaining.”

During the semifinal we heard excellent presentations from across University’s research areas. Semifinalists who pitched their research were:

  • Aino Sorsa, Department of Psychology: In sync with speech: the path to reading?
  • Kimmo Lehtinen, Department of Biological and Environmental Science: Red Light Controlled Cell Death
  • Jun Liu, Department of Biological and Environmental Science: Antimicrobial textiles
  • Sanna Turakka, Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences: Perfectionism and self-compassion in sport
  • Robin Chouleur, Department of Language and Communication Studies: Winners and Losers in Language History: The Cases of Finnish and Occitan.

The jury that selected the winner consisted of experts from various fields: the University’s Vice Rector Kaisa Miettinen, Nina Rautiainen from the Central Finland Mobility Foundation, Mika Fisk from Startup Factory and Pirkko Melville from the ELY-centre.

The presentations generated great enthusiasm among the jury and the audience. A big thank you to everyone who seized the opportunity to improve their presentation and science communication skills!
