JYU increases its study places significantly in autumn 2020

In its meeting of 5 June 2020, the University Board of the University of Jyväskylä authorised the Rector to increase the number of students admitted to pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree at JYU with at the most 268 students, based on negotiations on additional funding with the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The faculties of the University have proposed in total 164 additional study places. Since the additional funding is still in the preparation phase, the Board delegated the authority to decide the final number of additional study places, in any case at the most 268, to Rector Keijo Hämäläinen. As a result, the number of students admitted to JYU in autumn 2020 will be at the most 3,149 students.

The decision is based on the government’s additional budget for 2020, published on 2 June, which proposes funding to increase study places in higher education institutions in the ongoing student admission. The aim is to ensure that an increasing number of young people have access to higher education and eventually to the labour market.

According to the proposal of faculties, most additional places at JYU have been suggested for the bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in mathematical information technology and information systems science at the Faculty of Information Technology. A significant increase in study places has also been proposed for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science and JSBE. The numbers will be specified in negotiations with the Ministry of Education and Culture and will be reported after 10 June.

Faculties will decide on the admission criteria and how to allocate the additional study places between the certificate admission and the admission based on entrance examinations. Study option-specific information on this will be provided later.
