Jyväskylä Universities launches preliminary study into a shared learning environment service

The strategic steering group of the Jyväskylä Universities has decided to launch a preliminary study into a shared learning environment service. A learning environment service is an online service that provides a platform for learning, teaching and course management. The University of Jyväskylä and Jamk University of Applied Sciences currently use several separate Moodle-based learning environment services.

The study is needed because the existing separate Moodle-based services do not provide the flexibility or interoperability required to organise shared and multimodal education across the higher education group. The current model, with multiple Moodle environments, does not integrate well with the planned systems for study administration, user management and reporting that will support the provision of shared studies. It also requires considerable in-house expertise to maintain and develop.

The study will begin with a market survey of learning environment products and service providers capable of meeting the higher education group’s needs. The survey will provide an overview of the market and help the procurement units prepare for a possible competitive tendering process. It will be conducted between October 2026 and January 2027. Any competitive tendering process will be planned and communicated after the preliminary study is completed in spring 2027.
