In October 2025, the Nanoscience Center welcomed the International Advisory Board for a review of the center’s research and teaching activities. The board consisted of leading nanoscience experts: Professor Peter Hegemann (Humboldt University, Berlin), Professor Sirpa Jalkanen (University of Turku), Professor Heiner Linke (Lund University), Professor Giulio Cerullo (University of Milan), and Professor Jeremy Sanders (University of Cambridge).

Top publications and funding are proof of success

The advisory board report considers NSC’s three main research lines – Health and Wellbeing, Sustainable Society, and Second Quantum Revolution – to be of significant societal importance. Development of these themes will continue in the coming years. The board also regards NSC’s infrastructure and its ongoing development as a key competitive advantage.

 - Interdisciplinarity and strong infrastructure give us the tools to tackle major scientific questions and societal challenges. NSC researchers have performed exceptionally well in international funding calls, and the number of high-impact publications continues to grow, says Scientific Director of Nanoscience Center, Professor, Lotta-Riina Sundberg from the University of Jyväskylä.

The international research community is building a sustainable future

The Nanoscience Center is an international community of about 40 research groups and 170 researchers working in areas such as health and wellbeing, sustainable development, and quantum technologies. The center is strongly committed to developing infrastructure and strategic research areas that support Finland’s and Europe’s scientific ambitions.
