Plenty of interest in University of Jyväskylä’s new bachelor’s programmes in the first joint application round in spring 2026
The application period ended yesterday, yielding a total of 3,964 applications to the University. Of these, 3,282 are competing for the 407 study places available in the University’s twenty English-language master’s degree programmes, while 682 applications concern the intake of 60 students in the two bachelor’s degree programmes.
The total number of applicants was 3,213, as one person can apply for multiple programmes. This is a decrease on the last year’s figure of 4,200 applicants. The trend has been similar in other universities as well.
“We are delighted that our international bachelor’s degree programmes have generated significant interest among applicants,” says Director of Student and Academic Services Mari Ikonen. “The number of applicants from outside the EU and EEA countries for our international master’s degree programmes declined in comparison to the previous year. This decline was to be expected given the changes to tuition fees and the scholarship scheme.”
The most popular target by number of applications was again the Master’s Degree Programme in Artificial Intelligence provided by the Faculty of Information Technology (547 applications). The second highest number of applications were for the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Business Innovation and Sustainability provided by Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics (475). Among master’s degree programmes, the Educational Sciences programme in the Faculty of Education and Psychology received the second highest number of applications (285).
Altogether, the applicants came from 98 countries. The largest group was Finns with 789 applicants. A total of 1,016 applicants came from the EU and EEA countries, while 2,197 applicants came from other countries.
The degree programmes are open to applicants from Finland and abroad. Students from outside the EU and EEA are charged annual tuition fees. Students who are required to pay tuition fees can apply for a scholarship from the University to cover part of these fees from the second year of study onwards.
JYU has more than 1,000 foreign students each year, around 250 of whom enrol on English-language bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes. The rest are enrolled on doctoral programmes or are exchange students.
