Student email service changed to Outlook in 2023

Why is the change made?
The University of Jyväskylä is centralising its services to Microsoft’s 365 cloud services (formerly Office365) and in that connection the student email will also be changed to Outlook. This will improve the data security of email, because logging in to the cloud email requires Microsoft multi-factor authentication (MFA).
What a student needs to do?
Even though the email system itself will be changed automatically and does not require you to act, please make sure already now that the things listed below are in order so that you will be able to use your new email.
- Define the student email address you are using on the User account and email tab of the Oma service by selecting it in the dropdown menu of the Email field. After making the definition, click Save. You must make this definition to be able to use the new Outlook.
- Activate M365 services on the Services tab of the Oma service. Instructions for the activation are available here.
- Enable Microsoft MFA so that you are able to use Microsoft cloud email and other Microsoft services. Acquiring electronic degree certificates also requires multi-factor authentication.
When will the change take place?
Gradually during the year 2023, starting from May. You will receive a message to your personal email when your email client is about to change.
However, if you wish to change to Microsoft cloud email right away, please fill in this form to initiate the change process.
What will change?
The address and application for logging in to email change. Outlook email looks different from Gmail.
What will not change?
Regardless of the email change, other Google services (e.g. Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides) are in use until further notice so you don’t need to worry about your files in them. No emails will disappear in connection of the change. You can log in to Google services here.
Also M365 applications (e.g. OneDrive, Teams, Word, Excel) are available for you for free, and JYU recommends to use them. Log in to the service at office365.jyu.fi with your user ID (username@jyu.fi).
Student email will be called ISA mail also in the future.
How do I log in to the email after the change?
- Logging in to Outlook takes place at http://outlook.jyu.fi
- You can log in using your username (username@jyu.fi) and your password.
- On your phone, you can use the email with the Outlook app. See instructions for deploying the Outlook app in an Android phone or iOS phone.
- Logging in to Outlook requires the enabling of Microsoft MFA. MFA is not asked every time you log in. See instructions for enabling MFA.
