Susanna Huovinen named Alum of the Year 2026 at the University of Jyväskylä

Huovinen has had a long and distinguished career in Finnish political life. She has served as Member of Parliament, Minister, and Under-Secretary of State for Administrative Policy at the Ministry of Finance. She currently serves at the Association of Finnish Cities and Municipalities (AFCM) as Deputy Managing Director and heads the division for well-being and education.

Susanna Huovinen graduated from the University of Jyväskylä with a Master’s degree in Social Sciences in 1998, specialising in social policy.

Huovinen has promoted education, well-being and culture, and has led significant social reforms. Huovinen’s career is an outstanding reflection of the values and impact of the University of Jyväskylä, demonstrating how a degree in social sciences can lead to significant positions of responsibility at various levels of society.

Susanna Huovinen has maintained strong ties with the University of Jyväskylä since graduating. She has contributed to the work of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, shared her alumni journey as part of the university’s alumni communications, and served as an alumni speaker at public events.

Huovinen has succeeded in combining expertise, leadership and social influence in a way that serves as an inspiring example to current students and graduates.

The Alum of the Year is selected by Rector Jari Ojala, Juhani Lillberg, Chair of the JYKYS Alumni Association, Anni Karhunen, Liaison Manager, and Heli Mäki, Alumni Coordinator, from a shortlist of nominations received from the university community.
