The University of Jyväskylä and the City of Jyväskylä sign a letter of intent on the ownership of Jamk University of Applied Sciences

On 7 May 2025, the University of Jyväskylä and the City of Jyväskylä signed a letter of intent on expanding the ownership of Jamk University of Applied Sciences. The aim is that in the first phase the City will sell a significant minority share in Jamk (30–35%) to JYU, and in the second phase JYU will become the main owner of Jamk.

The signing of the letter of intent will start a process of clarification that will include, for example, a more detailed timetable for the change process, a value assessment in relation to the share transaction, and the drafting of a shareholder’s agreement in line with the new ownership base.

Together with the ownership arrangements, JYU and Jamk have prepared a plan for the Ministry of Education and Culture to form a joint higher education consortium. The plan will be further adjusted if JYU acquires a significant minority share in Jamk, and the adjustment will be made by involving the staff and students of both institutions.

Jyväskylä City Council approved the letter of intent at its meeting on 17 March 2025. JYU and Jamk reported on their plans for the first time on 29 January 2025.

The City and JYU aim to sign a binding share transaction agreement in 2025.
