The task of the Research Professor focuses on generating new, research-based knowledge to drive systemic change towards a circular economy, addressing global sustainability challenges through innovative solutions and collaborative teamwork.

The task of the Research Professor is to analyse the development of CE markets using economics and/or business management research methods. Essential objectives are to (a) explore how different observations and research results concerning CE can be generalised at the level of the national economy, and (b) estimate the potential economic impacts of CE under different scenarios and modeling assumptions, in comparison with environmental implications.

The Research Professor will be able to draw on the expertise and networks of both JSBE and the Finnish Environment Institute.

“Both the Finnish Environment Institute and JSBE have a long history of circular economy research,” says Dean Hanna-Leena Pesonen from JSBE. “The joint research professor will strengthen our collaboration and combine our strengths to address new issues in circular economy research.”

“Transitioning from a linear to a circular economy can mitigate climate change and prevent biodiversity loss,” says Unit Director Pekka Leskinen from the Finnish Environment Institute. “By collaborating with the University of Jyväskylä, we will be better able to assess the impact of the circular economy on the national economy. Reforming economic structures away from a linear economy is a key challenge not only for the environment but also for economic wellbeing.”

The application period for the Research Professor position ends on Friday, 6 June 2025, at 3:00 p.m.
