The University of Jyväskylä and Université Bourgogne Europe launch a new Joint Master's Degree Programme in Action Neuroscience

The University of Jyväskylä will launch a new international Joint Master's Degree Programme in Action Neuroscience in collaboration with Université Bourgogne Europe (UBE) in France. The programme brings together neuroscience, biomechanics and signal processing to explore how the brain and body work together to shape human movement and behaviour.

The two-year programme offers students a unique opportunity to study at two European universities and earn master's degrees from both the University of Jyväskylä and Université Bourgogne Europe.

The focus of the Action Neuroscience programme is on understanding the whole human sensorimotor system function and adaptation, including the nervous, muscular, tendinous, skeletal and other related systems.

"Understanding how the brain and body work together is becoming increasingly important in fields ranging from health and rehabilitation to sports performance and technology development," says Professor Harri Piitulainen, Academic Head of the programme at the University of Jyväskylä.

His counterpart at Université Bourgogne Europe, Professor Vianney Rozand, states: “This programme provides students with a strong scientific foundation and practical research skills applicable across a wide range of disciplines.”

Bridging brain research and movement science

The new programme brings together perspectives from neurophysiology, neuroimaging, biomechanics, signal processing and data science. Students will gain hands-on experience with modern methods used to study human movement, behaviour and brain function.

The University of Jyväskylä is internationally recognised for its expertise in neuroimaging methods, biomechanics and the neurophysiological basis of human movement, while Université Bourgogne Europe contributes strengths in cognitive neuroscience, clinical research, programming and artificial intelligence.

International expertise through studies in Finland and France

As a joint degree student, participants will study in both Jyväskylä, Finland, and Dijon, France, gaining experience in two academic cultures and research environments. Upon graduation, students will receive master's degrees of sport sciences from both partner universities, strengthening their international career opportunities. The Action Neuroscience programme is delivered fully in English.

The programme prepares graduates for careers in healthcare, health technology, rehabilitation, sports performance analysis and data science. It also offers an excellent foundation for doctoral studies and international research careers.

Apply in January 2027

Applications for the programme will be open from 7 to 28 January 2027, and studies will begin in August 2027. The programme comprises 120 ECTS credits and is taught entirely in English.
