Clone of The Department of Mathematics and Statistics will move to Agora in August 2026

The JYU Department of Mathematics and Statistics will move to new facilities in the Agora building in July and August 2026. The relocation is based on the University’s decision to reduce facilities in Mattilanniemi and to enhance the use of facilities on campuses.

From August 2026, the department will be located on the third and fourth floors of the B wing of the Agora building. This relocation will affect staff offices. Teaching will mainly take place on the Mattilanniemi and Ylistönrinne campuses close to Agora. The department’s operations will continue as normal regardless of the relocation.

New location will enhance collaboration between mathematics, statistics and information technology

Placing the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in Agora will enable closer collaboration with the Faculty of Information Technology in particular. The units have previously engaged in joint research projects, and the cooperation has become even closer with the introduction of new engineering programmes.

“Moving to Agora will encourage multidisciplinary and innovative collaboration,” says Tapio Rajala, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. “The new facilities support modern teaching and research, and I believe that the change will benefit staff and students for many years to come.”

Modernised facilities support learning and streamline daily operations

The new facilities and increased collaborative spaces facilitate flexible teaching solutions.

“The renewed facilities provide students with an improved framework for learning and collaborative working,” says Rajala. “Modern working spaces and more flexible facility arrangements make daily life smoother and support new types of learning.”

Briefing sessions will be organised for students in spring to provide more details about the relocation schedule, where teaching will take place in the new facilities, and practical changes in Agora. The first briefing session, which will address the relocation and the reform of curriculum, will take place on Thursday, 23 April 2026, at 2:15 p.m. in Room MaD202. Other sessions will be announced separately in spring.

More detailed relocation schedules and instructions for staff and students will be provided in spring 2026.
