I am Dr. Ari Heinonen, emeritus professor and research director. I held the position of professor of Physiotherapy in years 2003-2022, Dean of the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences (2018-2021) and Head of the Department of Health Sciences (2010-2017) at the University of Jyväskylä. During the years 1989-2003, I was working at the UKK Institute for Health Promotion Research Tampere, Finland as a researcher and senior researcher. In addition, I was a visiting scholar at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada during the years 1999-2001. I was been appointed as the Canadian Research Chair in Physical Activity and Bone Health in 2002 at the University of British Columbia. I am a physiotherapist by training (1982) and graduated from the University of Jyväskylä with Master of Science degree 1989 (Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology) and Doctor of Philosophy 1997 (Biomechanics). According to my research, I have extensive experience with randomized controlled exercise interventions (RCTs) related to the effects of physical activity and mechanical stress on skeletal characteristics and articular cartilage. According to my research, I have extensive experience with randomized controlled exercise interventions (RCTs), especially related to the effects of exercise and physical activity on bone and articular cartilage. In other words, my research explores which exercise modalities best improve the mechanical properties and physical performance of bones and articular cartilage in different target groups, as well as physical rehabilitation and the prevention of exercise injuries.
