Biography
I am a doctoral researcher in Applied Linguistics at the Department of Language and Communication Studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. My research interests include autonomy-supportive learning, innovative qualitative methods, and the psychology of language learning and teaching, with a particular interest in the role of emotions in language education.
Before moving to Finland, I worked in Brazil as a language teacher educator, supporting pre-service teachers in becoming reflective practitioners, and as an English teacher to learners of different proficiency levels. I also worked in Japan as a learning advisor and lecturer helping university students in developing self-regulation skills, reflective learning practices, and well-being.
I have presented my research at international conferences and led professional development workshops for teachers. My work has appeared in top-tier journals such as System, AILA Review, and Language Teaching Research. I am currently an associate editor of Studies in Self-Access Learning Journal, and regularly review manuscripts for international journals.
Research interests
In my dissertation, I investigate the emotional lives of pre-service and in-service language teachers and how these experiences shape their professional identities and the choices they feel able to make in their work. Using a longitudinal qualitative approach with in-depth interviews, reflective diaries, and emotion graphs, I explore how teachers navigate emotions while working with students, colleagues, and institutions. I examine not only the strategies teachers use to manage their feelings but also how schools and educational systems influence which emotions are considered acceptable to express in the classroom. My research also reflects on how educational institutions can promote fairness, inclusivity, and care in teaching, offering insights into how we can create supportive environments that help teachers thrive, grow, and make a positive difference in their students’ lives.
