Gonzalo Cortés-Capano is an interdisciplinary environmental social scientist working at the intersection of environmental philosophy, human geography, biodiversity conservation, and landscape studies. He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher in Philosophy at the University of Jyväskylä working in the COHAB project (ERC funding) on the ethics and politics of cohabitability.
His research explores how landscape narratives, ethics, practices and governance shape pathways of socio-ecological transformation, with a particular interest in environmental justice, care, responsibility, and plural forms of human–environment and multispecies coexistence. He combines conceptual and empirical approaches, drawing on participatory, ethnographic and narrative methods to understand how people and more-than-human beings experience, negotiate and shape changing landscapes.
Gonzalo received his PhD from the University of Helsinki and previously held a postdoctoral position at the University of Jyväskylä. He was an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the Universities of Göttingen and Kassel (2024–2026), where he led comparative research on rural transitions in the French Alps and central Germany. His broader experience includes biodiversity conservation, protected-area management, agroecology, pastoralism and environmental governance in Europe and Latin America. He is an Associate Editor of People and Nature (British Ecological Society).
