Biography
Ilkka Pölönen is an associate professor at the University of Jyväskylä’s Faculty of Information Technology in Finland. He is widely recognized for his contributions to education, teaching both beginner and advanced machine learning courses that prepare students for careers in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
Beyond his academic duties, Pölönen plays an influential role in the broader AI community as a board member of the Finnish Artificial Intelligence Society, helping to shape future innovations and policies.

Research interests
Pölönen focuses on developing and applying advanced computational methods for hyperspectral imaging and data analysis. Leading the Spectral Imaging Laboratory, his work leverages machine learning, computer vision, and spectral imaging techniques to interpret hyperspectral data across various disciplines — from remote sensing and medicine to biology and art history. His interdisciplinary approach bridges theory with practical applications, continually advancing the frontiers of computational data analysis.
