Toni Mättö's research is mostly in the field of management accounting and the public sector. This research has provided implications for public sector management on how to conduct relevant and effective process improvement. Recent research has also examined non-IFRS reporting, digital business through budgeting software and accounting information systems. Ongoing research efforts are centered on performance measurement systems in the Universities, risk management regulation in the public sector and NGO accountability.
