ANSE

Software development is undergoing a change of magnitude of invention of the Internet today. About 80% of the software code was written manually prior to year 2023. Today, reports say that even up to 90% of the software code is written by an Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI. Software development is currently under a paradigm shift in which artificial intelligence and generative software reuse are taking the center stage in software creation. Consequently, earlier software reuse practices and methods are rapidly being replaced by AI-driven approaches in which developers place their trust on code that has been generated by artificial intelligence. This is leading to a new form of software reuse that is conceptually very similar to cargo cult development.

In project ANSE, we design what we call AI native Software Engineering process. In the first phase, we explore key challenges and potential solutions. In the second, we experiment with these methods in industry settings to help establish new standards for AI-assisted software engineering. Our broader goal is to ensure that AI-generated code becomes a reliable, high-quality and strategically sovereign part of software innovation. This strengthens Finland’s digital resilience—its ability to develop and maintain critical systems independently in a rapidly changing world. We foresee that this project will also increase Finland’s profile as a land of disrupting technologies, thus attracting new talent globally.
