Project description

ChildGaze –Young children’s gaze behaviour in peer play - project investigates visual gaze and peer interaction of young children (3–5 years old) during construction play.

The aim is to generate new knowledge on

•     children’s gaze in construction play with peers

•    reciprocal gaze between adults and children

•    the research use of eye-tracking glasses with young children

The study consists of two phases. In the first phase, the construction play sessions will be conducted at the University of Jyväskylä in the JYU Child and Family Lab’s facilities in Opinkivi building.

In the second phase, the play sessions will be conducted in a similar manner in four ECEC centers in play session with four children.

The data for the study consists of eye-tracking videos with eye-tracking glasses (adults and children), broader video recordings of the sessions, and observations recorded by the researchers, as well as interviews with children and adults. During the interviews, participants are shown videos that show the eye-tracking data during the sessions.

The project have received a positive evaluation in the ethical review conducted by the University of Jyväskylä’s Human Sciences Ethics Committee (2026).
