Project description
Development and Coordination of the Move! System (JYU)
The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä is responsible for the national development of the Move! system. The development work is funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture and carried out in close cooperation with the Ministry, the National Sports Council, the Finnish National Agency for Education, and other national stakeholders.
The core focus of the development work is to promote the pedagogical use of the Move! system and data-informed leadership, as well as to support the research-based development of children’s and adolescents’ physical functional capacity.
National Steering Group
The development of the system is supported by a national steering group appointed by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The Move! Steering Group, operating since 2020, is responsible for:
- Providing national strategic guidelines related to the Move! system,
- Acting as a cross-administrative cooperation body between central government and key expert organisations regarding the Move! system,
- Promoting the national, regional, and local cross-sectoral and multidisciplinary implementation and utilisation of the Move! system, and
- Advancing the use of the knowledge base generated by the Move! system.
The Steering Group includes representatives from the University of Jyväskylä, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the National Sports Council, the Finnish National Agency for Education, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, CSC – IT Center for Science, JAMK University of Applied Sciences, and the UKK Institute.
Move! system
Move! is a national monitoring and feedback system for Finnish 5th and 8th grade pupils’ physical functional capacity (=physical fitness and motor competence). Its' main purpose is to encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own physical functional capacity and to support schools, guardians, school health services, and other stakeholders in promoting a physically active lifestyle.
Move! is implemented in all Finnish primary and lower secondary schools to ensure comprehensive coverage of entire age groups. The results of the Move!-measurements are used, for example, in physical education teaching, in expanded health checks conducted by school health care services, and in the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of national, regional, and local wellbeing initiatives.
