Project description

PIRLS is a large-scale international survey of children's literacy. The first PIRLS survey was conducted in 2001. Finland has participated in the survey in 2011, 2016 and 2021. Finland is also participating in the new round of the PIRLS survey, with a pre-test in 2025, a main test in 2026 and results to be published in late 2027.

The purpose of the PIRLS project is to develop the education system and reading teaching in the participating countries. It is not an assessment of individual students, schools or teachers, but the aim is to produce reliable and diverse information on the level of reading comprehension and the factors affecting it for the needs of schools, decision-makers, parents, students and others interested in the development of literacy. The survey provides a wealth of information, for example, on how parents can support their child's literacy development. It also provides a lot of information on school resources and the key content of teaching.

The PIRLS survey is funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the University of Jyväskylä. The study is coordinated by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) in collaboration with the TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center at Boston University. The Institute for Educational Research at the University of Jyväskylä is responsible for national implementation.
