Project description
The SITES - Social Inclusion and Diversity in Early Childhood Education and Care research project examines children's social inclusion, equality and belonging in linguistically and culturally diverse early childhood education and care groups.
In particular, we will look at:
- The construction of social inclusion, equality and belonging in linguistically and culturally diverse early childhood education and care groups
- The functioning of children's groups and interactions between children and adults and between children
- Transitions in early childhood education and care
- Educational cooperation between early childhood staff and guardians and the participation of guardians
- Early childhood education and care service guidance for guardians
The aim of the research project is to increase the understanding of the inclusion of children and their families and to provide information on the enabling and challenging factors of social inclusion and cooperation practices in early childhood education and care.
1. Construction of social inclusion and participation in the everyday practices of children´s groups in early childhood education and care
2. Constructing meanings of social inclusion and diversity in the practices of cooperation between families and early childhood education and care institutions
3. The construction of conditions for social inclusion and participation in early childhood education and care services and policies
The project aims to increase understanding and knowledge of diversity and the practices, structures, processes and policies that enable and challenge social inclusion in early childhood education and care institutions.
The project will collect data on the everyday life of culturally and linguistically diverse groups of children through ethnographic research. The research will be carried out from the perspectives of children, their parents and early childhood professionals, using various methods, such as observation, video recording, interviews, and collecting documents and photographs. Data will be collected in groups of children under and over three years old between 11/2025 and 05/2026.
