SMART Makerspace Assessment & Rubric Toolkit

SMART strengthens digital transformation in education by helping teachers learn how to design, run, and assess digitally supported Making projects in STEAM makerspaces. The project develops practical assessment tools, training materials, and an online course to help educators evaluate important 21st century skills such as creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. SMART also promotes inclusive and high-quality STEM education by supporting the participation of women and underrepresented groups and by showing how Making can be used across different subjects, not only in traditional STEM areas. Through validated rubrics and professional development opportunities, the project helps teachers assess learning more fairly, consistently, and effectively in modern classrooms.

Project description

The SMART project aims to develop and validate an empirically grounded assessment framework for Maker-based and project-based learning in teacher education. It seeks to equip pre-service and in-service teachers with tools to assess 21st century skills (critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication) in digitally enriched STEAM environments. The project also promotes inclusive and gender-sensitive STEM assessment practices across European higher education systems.

The project will conduct a systematic literature review, curriculum analysis, and interviews with teachers and Makerspace leaders to develop a validated Making Assessment Framework. Based on this framework, curriculum recommendations and grading rubrics will be created. An open-access MOOC will train teachers in assessing 21st century skills. Pilot activities, feedback loops, empirical validation, and dissemination events will ensure quality, impact, and European transferability.

SMART will deliver a validated European Making Assessment Framework, curriculum recommendations, and an open-access MOOC for teacher training. The project will produce empirical data reports, grading guidelines, and best-practice examples. It will strengthen teachers’ digital assessment competencies, support inclusive STEM education, and enhance the quality and transparency of competence-based assessment in Maker education across participating countries.
