Research at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The main research areas at the department are geometry and analysis, probability and statistics.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is involved in two Finnish Centre of Excellence of the Academy of Finland and one Flagships of the Academy of Finland.

The Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems

The Centre of Excellence in Randomness and Structures

The Flagship of Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling

The Department belongs to significant concentrations of mathematical research both in Finland and abroad. Researchers of the department have obtained European Research Council (ERC) and Research Council of Finland (formerly: Academy of Finland) grants. Strengths in mathematics research are mathematical analysis and its applications in the study of inverse problems. Mathematical analysis has a long tradition in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Statistics strengthens the quantitative approach to research in the humanities as well.

The research is multidisciplinary, from pure mathematics problems to applied modeling.

Geometry Laboratory at Jyväskylä

Matematiikan tutkimus
The Geometry Laboratory introduces master’s students to the world of mathematical research and collaboration at the University of Jyväskylä.

The new Geometry Laboratory in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers master’s students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with mathematical research and the activities of research groups. The goal of the initiative is to strengthen collaboration and communication skills within both national and international networks, lower the barrier between students and staff, and highlight the importance of scientific impact. The Geometry Lab is based on an internationally recognized model that has already been implemented at several universities in the United States.
