Introduction to the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences
We have a unique combination of expertise in sport, health and well-being. We study physical activity and its links to health in a multidisciplinary environment and act as a global networker in a changing society.
Our aim is to promote physical activity, well-being and health at different stages of life. Our research covers the whole human life cycle from early childhood to old age.
We educate experts for various specialist roles in physical activity and health and are responsible for Finnish physical education teacher training. We have been training PE teachers in Finland for 60 years, since 1963. Our faculty was established in 1968. We employ around 200 experts and have almost 1,400 students.
Our core values, in line with the University’s own, are
openness, trust, quality and integrity.

Sports Technology Unit (JYU-Vuokatti) is part of the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences. The Sports Technology Unit specializes in multidisciplinary and applied research in sport biology and in Master's and PhD studies in sport technology.
On the research side, JYU-Vuokatti specializes in applied and technology-based research, particularly in Nordic skiing. JYU-Vuokatti has a strong national and international research and development network.

Docentship
The docentship is primarily awarded to the University's core fields and profiling areas of research and teaching or to areas that complement them. A title of docent can be granted by application to a person who has comprehensive knowledge of their own field, a capacity for independent academic research demonstrated through publications or some other manner, and good teaching skills.
When awarding docentships, attention is paid to the fact that the faculty/department has a concrete need for cooperation with external parties and internationalization in the field of applied docentship.
