The Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Science offers the following specialisation options: Biological and Environmental Science, Clinical Cell Biology (in Finnish only), Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Statistics and Data Science. The specialisation is selected when applying the study right.
Students studying in the specialisation of Biological and Environmental Science, Clinical Cell Biology, Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics will graduate with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. Students studying in the specialisation of Statistics and Data Science will graduate with a Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Science (Technology) degree.
Detailed descriptions of the specialisation options can be seen below. The structure of studies (coursework requirements) in each specialisation is described in the study guide.
Biological and Environmental Science
In Biological and Environmental Science, we train experts who understand the diversity of life from the structural and cellular level to individuals, communities, and ecosystems, and who know how to apply this knowledge to solve key challenges facing society. The program offers the opportunity to focus on topics such as biological nanoscience, evolutionary research, or the sustainable use of natural resources, and to develop in-depth expertise through experimental research, theoretical thinking, and modeling. During your studies, you will develop your ability to produce new research data, critically evaluate existing research, and apply methods that meet the needs of a rapidly changing field of science. Basic research and applied research go hand in hand.
In addition to the dissertation, 30 ECTS credits of postgraduate studies are completed.
