Eligibility criteria
These admission criteria are valid for student selections made in 2026. The faculty reserves the right to make changes between application rounds as necessary. The number of study seats is decided annually and will be announced on Studyinfo before the application period begins.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible, you must have a qualification that gives eligibility for bachelor’s-level studies in the awarding country, and demonstrate adequate English proficiency, as described below.
1. Educational background
You must have completed one of the following qualifications:
- Upper secondary education (general or vocational) completed outside Finland that gives eligibility for bachelor’s-level degree studies in the awarding country,
- the Finnish matriculation examination, the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, the European Baccalaureate (EB) diploma, or the Deutsche Internationale Abiturprüfung (DIA) or Reifeprüfung (RP) diploma,
- a Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), or
- Finnish vocational upper secondary qualification, further vocational qualification or specialist vocational qualification as set in the Vocational Education Act (531/2017).
You are also eligible to apply if you have been granted one of the following:
- a study right to a university degree in Finland,
- a degree by a Finnish higher education institution, or
- a bachelor’s degree or higher by a foreign institution.
If the qualification used to prove eligibility is incomplete at the time of application, you may be admitted on a conditional basis. In this case, you must graduate and submit required documents regarding your educational background so that they are received by the University by a specified deadline. The deadline(s) will be posted on the University’s website before the application period starts.
2. English-language proficiency
The Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi) of the University of Jyväskylä will assess your English-language proficiency and academic readiness using the Academic Readiness Screening (ACRES). ACRES is integrated into the admission process and consists of a written task and an online interview. To be considered for admission, you must demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency (B1-B2) in each of the following components: reading skills, writing skills, oral interaction and spoken production. Please see Assessment Guidelines (jyu.fi) for more information (link to be updated).
When applying for this programme, you can prove your English skills only by participating in ACRES. The University does not grant waivers for language requirement.
Admissions procedure
Online application, required attachments, online exam, interview and ACRES
The admissions process is divided into three parts:
- submitting the application and all required attachments on Studyinfo,
- participating in an online exam and written task, and
- participating in an online interview (if applicable).
You can find further information on each of the phases below.
Please note that claiming AI-generated content as your own without acknowledging it is considered plagiarism. If we detect use of AI during the admission process without proper acknowledgement, the assignment in question will be given zero points.
Phase 1: Submitting the application and all required attachments
First, you must submit your application on Studyinfo.fi along with the necessary attachments by the given deadlines.
On the application form, you will have a chance to provide a link to your online portfolio (e.g. GitHub) where you showcase your skills and previous experiences from the IT or other fields. Providing this kind of additional material to support your application is optional, and having previous practical experience in the IT or other fields is not required.
Phase 2: Participating in an online exam and written task
All applicants who have submitted an application and paid the application fee (if applicable) are invited to participate in an online exam. The invitations to the exam are sent by email after the general attachment deadline which is 28 January 3:00 p.m. (UTC+2) 2026. The online exam will be open for 4 days in February.
The exam will be carried out in a digital exam system called TIM. The exam must be completed by the applicant in a given time frame. Once you start the exam, you must finish it within the same session.
You are responsible for providing yourself with the space, time, and equipment to enable participation in the online exam. More detailed instructions will be provided in the online exam invitation.
The online exam consists of two parts:
- Exercises that aim to test your skills in consistent reasoning and logical thinking. The aim is to recognize the applicant’s ability to learn efficiently instead of measuring their current level of knowledge.
- A written task which aims to test your field-specific English reading comprehension skills as well as your ability to present your ideas logically in written English.
The written task of applicants who meet the general eligibility criteria regarding their educational background (as outlined under 'Eligibility criteria') and who achieve the highest scores from the first part of the exam (max. 100 applicants) will be evaluated.
Ineligible applications will not be processed further after they have been found not to meet the documentary requirements. Furthermore, if an applicant is liable to pay the application fee and has not paid the fee by the given deadline, or if the applicant does not participate in the online exam and/or written task by the given deadline, the application will not be processed further.
After the evaluation of the written tasks, applicants who successfully pass the written task will be invited to an online interview.
Phase 3: Participating in an online interview (if applicable)
The structured online interview will be recorded, and the recordings will be used for student selection purposes only. You are responsible for providing yourself with the space, time, and equipment to enable participation in the interview. More detailed instructions will be provided in the interview invitation.
The academic staff of the programme and the Centre for Multilingual and Academic Communication (Movi) will evaluate the interview according to the following categories:
- The applicant’s ability to demonstrate consistent reasoning and logical and creative thinking
- Motivation, commitment, perseverance and diligence over time
- Oral interaction (for instance, the ability to articulate concepts one does not yet fully understand /communicate emerging or partially understood concepts)
- Spoken production: accuracy and content
Your oral English skills will be evaluated based on the recorded interview. You will be assessed on your ability to participate appropriately in spoken English situations and follow structured lines of discussion. Additionally, the relevance and content of your spoken production will constitute a part of your overall assessment.
AI-detection tools and AI, such as Turnitin-plagiarism check, will be used to assist in the assessment and to detect possible plagiarism.
The applicant must score points from each interview category to be considered for admission.
Final selection
Applicants will be ranked according to the scores received from the online interview, and the highest-scoring applicants, in accordance with the number of available study seats, will be admitted.
If two or more applicants are tied for the last study place, all of them will be admitted.
