Student exchange at JYU

You can apply to the University of Jyväskylä (JYU) as an exchange student for one or two semesters if your home university is a partner university of JYU. You should first apply through your home university to be nominated to Erasmus+, Erasmus+ Global, Nordplus, Nordlys, ISEP, Becas Chile or bilateral exchange.

1. Please ask your home university to inform the JYU International Office of your nomination to study at the University of Jyväskylä. The nominations should be sent via our online nomination form by 1 May / 15 October. A link to the online nomination form has been sent to your home university. 
2. After your home university has nominated you to study at the University of Jyväskylä as an exchange student and your nomination has been accepted, you will receive the link for the online application form by email along with the application instructions. 
3. Register to the application systm and fill in an online application no later than 15 May / 1 November. Please note that you should apply for accommodation via a separate application form (application periods for accommodation are 7-20 May for the autumn semester and 18 October-1 November for the spring semester). 4. You will receive a letter of admission and information on living and studying in Jyväskylä after your application has been accepted.

1. Contact a faculty-level international coordinator at JYU in order to find an academic supervisor for the duration of your stay at JYU. If you already have an academic supervisor at JYU, you can proceed to filling in the online application.
2. Complete an online application for visiting doctoral students. The application period begins in March/September. In order to finalize your application, please complete these steps by the application deadline:

• Register to Mobility-Online using a link which you will receive after having completed the online application.
• Enter Mobility-Online and complete your personal data by clicking the link "Complete personal data".
• Upload a certificate of your doctoral student status at your home university (preferably in English) into Mobility-Online in order to finalize the application. The document must be signed and stamped by a university official. Please note that your application cannot be processed without the certificate.

3. After your application is complete, it will be processed by the faculty in question. You will be notified of the decision of the faculty as soon the application has been processed. Please do not make any travel reservations before this.

Application deadline 

Please apply no later than one month before the beginning of your studies at JYU

1. Discuss your studies with the international coordinator of your host faculty.
2. Complete an online application to apply for a right to study at JYU as a visiting student trainee. 
3. Register to the application system and fill in your personal information. 
4. Upload your official transcript of records into the application system. The transcript should be in English. 
5. Prepare a study plan (learning agreement) where you list the courses you would like to complete at JYU.  
6. Upload a copy of your passport into the application system. 

Please submit your complete application at least a month before your studies at JYU begin.

A language test certificate is not required from exchange students, but the minimum requirement for students wishing to study at the University of Jyväskylä as exchange students is level B1. Applicants should preferably be B2 (or higher) level users of the English language in order to be able to follow university lectures in English, participate in seminar discussions and understand written material in their field. In addition, most courses require writing essays and research papers in English. 

If you are an Erasmus+ student, please assess your language skills in the Erasmus+ Online Linguistic Support system (OLS). Please contact your home university Erasmus+ coordinator for more information and access to it.

The University of Jyväskylä reserves a limited quota of furnished study-bedrooms for exchange students from the Central Finland Student Housing Foundation, KOAS, and Soihtu Housing. Therefore, furnished housing within the quota cannot be guaranteed to all exchange students, especially in the autumn semester. 

You can apply for accommodation by filling out a separate application form during these application periods:

• Autumn semester: 7 May - 20 May
• Spring semester: 18 October - 1 November

Please note that priority is given to students coming from FORTHEM partner universities and students coming through the following exchange programmes: Bilateral,  Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility, ISEP, provided that they apply in time.
