In 2023, the University of Jyväskylä carried out a Research Assessment Exercise that covered the period of 2018–2022 (see the final report). There were three objects of assessment. As with the research evaluation 2018, the research environment was one of them. The aim was to establish the quality of the research environment at the University and develop the research environment so that it will continue to promote and support the conduct of high-level research. The two other subjects were the societal impact of research conducted at JYU and doctoral training.

The assessment process included a self-assessment by the units and an external assessment by an international panel, which  were provided with background material. The assessment panel, whose members were nominated based on proposals made by the units of assessment, visited the University of Jyväskylä in May 2023. After the site visit, the assessment panel submitted a panel report, and the units of assessment finalized their research development plans during Autumn 2023.

The Research Assessment Exercise did not grade the units of assessment or compare the units within the University to each other. The results of the Research Assessment Exercise can be utilized in updating the university and unit level strategies.

The results of the research assessment have been compiled in the final report.

The Research Assessment Exercise followed the principles of the DORA Declarationthe recommendation for the responsible evaluation of a researcher in Finland and the Agreement on reforming research assessment.
