Free studies at our Open University

The members of our work community can study free of charge at our Open University. When you come to work for us, you will have almost endless options for learning, whether you want to deepen your current skills or move into completely new areas.

Our Open University is the largest and most popular in Finland. Its diverse offering allows you to select individual courses or extensive study modules for your programme, depending on your needs.

Our competence development model

Learning is a key part of everyone's job at our university. In competence development, we apply the 70/20/10 model.

On-the-job learning accounts for roughly 70% of adult learning and forms the foundation for all learning in the development of experienced professionals.

With us, you will learn on the job through new tasks, problem-solving, various projects, job rotation, staff mobility, and sharing your knowledge with others, for example, at conferences and seminars.

Interactive learning accounts for approximately 20% of adult learning. It refers to various ways for taking a moment to reflect together on and structure work-related content and practices.

Examples of these learning methods at our university include joint reflection, feedback and sharing examples, as well as guided development processes such as coaching, mentoring and workplace counselling. Read more about these on the following page:

Our guided interactive learning approaches

Formal learning, which accounts for about 10% of adult learning, refers to acquiring new knowledge and skills through courses, training sessions, webinars, literature, academic studies, etc.

Every year, we organise hundreds of internal staff training events related to the skills that support our strategy. In addition, we offer online courses created by our own experts for independent study, as well as a wide range of video recordings and remote training events provided by our training partner, Eduhouse.

Our goal is to provide everyone who works for us with the conditions for a people-centered, sustainable, and meaningful career. During your annual goal discussion with your supervisor, you can express your wishes regarding your professional development. We want everyone at JYU to be able to do meaningful work in a safe and encouraging work environment where it is genuinely possible to balance work with other aspects of life. We believe that wellbeing and competence go hand in hand. When people feel well, they also learn, discover, innovate, and experience joy in their work.
