Wellbeing in daily life at the University of Jyväskylä

The name of our strategy, Wisdom and wellbeing for us all, clearly states what is most important to us: the human being is at the center of everything we do. The wellbeing of the members of our work community is the foundation on which we build high-quality teaching, impactful research, and effective expert and support services.

What does wellbeing in daily life mean to us?

Wellbeing is an essential part of our work, leadership, and community. For us, wellbeing at work means a holistic approach where people are physically, mentally, and socially well, and where the meaning of work, skills development, and community spirit go hand in hand. To support the management of wellbeing at work, we use a wide range of tools and operating models, such as a wellbeing at work survey, workplace etiquette in the work community, an action model for early intervention and support, and coaching sessions for supervisors. Through these, we build a work community where everyone can succeed and feel a sense of belonging.

Wellbeing in everyday life is visible on our campuses in many ways, for example, through a sense of community, opportunities for physical activity during the workday, comprehensive occupational health services, flexible ways of working, an open culture of dialogue, and opportunities for personal and professional development.

Wellbeing services

We support wellbeing in a comprehensive way, both at work and outside of it. We offer members of our work community ways to strengthen their resilience, recovery, and mental wellbeing in various life situations. The goal of our wellbeing services is to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to find effective ways to maintain balance, recover, and support their own wellbeing as part of their work.

Examples of our services:

  • Staff Compass, a wellbeing and life skills programme developed by our own Department of Psychology for independent learning
  • webinars and online training on wellbeing topics

JYU on the move

Physical activity is an important part of our wellbeing and ability to cope at work. We want to encourage everyone to find their own ways to be active. The idea is that physical activity, as part of daily life, is not about performance, but about joyful, communal moments that support overall resilience.

Examples of the opportunities we offer:

  • You can use 2 hours of working time per week for physical activity
  • uMove, a wide range of Academic Sports services at a very affordable price
  • A break exercise app to help you take microbreaks during the working day
  • Exercise classes and coaching tailored to members of the work community.

Occupational health care

Occupational health care is an important part of wellbeing at work and early support. Our occupational health services cover both preventive activities and those aimed at maintaining work ability, as well as some health care services. Occupational health care provides employees with comprehensive support to maintain their health and work ability. You have flexible access to both in-person and remote services, according to your situation and needs.

Employee benefits and cultural activities

In addition to supporting wellbeing and a balanced daily life, we offer a comprehensive range of employee benefits. These provide extra opportunities alongside our own services to promote overall wellbeing through discounted services from external partners. Employee benefits complement our own wellbeing service package and create space for recovery during leisure time, as wellbeing is built not only at work but also beyond it.

The cultural activities on our campus promote JYU's identity, creativity, and overall wellbeing for both staff and students. We offer the members of the university community a variety of shared experiences, inspiration, and meeting places, including annual academic events, choir and orchestra concerts, our magnificent main campus designed by Alvar Aalto, as well as art collections.
