Academic procession at opening ceremony

Academic procession at opening ceremony requires dark suit. This means black or very dark suit or dress despite the gender. Doctorates who have graduated from foreign universities wear their own university’s academic dress during the procession.

Doctoral graduates participating in the procession wear doctoral hats. The doctoral hat is worn indoors as an exception when coffee is served at the University of Jyväskylä’s opening ceremony. Read more in section "The use of doctoral hat and sword".

Dark suit

A dark suit (also known as a “formal” suit) means festive attire.  Usually, the dark suit dress code applies to events which begin after 6:00 p.m. in the evening.

With the dark suit, merit and service year medals should be worn on the left side of the chest, if mentioned in the invitation.
See the section on wearing medals of merit earlier on this page.

Formal academic dress

The formal academic dress is either a tailcoat or a long black formal gown. Note the differences between the academic dress and the traditional tailcoat, as well as the details of the long black formal dress.

Inaugural lectures of new professors

New professors give inaugural lectures twice a year. The dress code for the audience at this event is smart casual, with guidelines provided earlier on this page. The professors giving the lectures will wear formal academic dress, with instructions provided earlier on this page.

Please note the exception: A female lecturer can wear a black knee-length skirt or dress, or long trousers, at the event. See more detailed instructions in the section “Formal academic dress”.

Merit and service year medals

Occasionally, invitations may specify that merit and service year medals should be worn as part of the outfit.

Public examination event and conferment of degrees ceremony

More detailed dress code instructions for the public examination event and the conferment ceremony can be found on the events’ own websites.

Smart casual

Smart attire (also “smart casual”) is the most relaxed dress code. However, this means dressing more formally than usual work attire.

The use of doctoral hat and sword

The doctoral hat is worn at traditional academic ceremonies. With a doctoral hat, the dress code is always either formal academic dress, a tailcoat, or a dark suit (at the public examination, also a doctoral gown). The hat is typically worn only outdoors.  Indoors, the hat is carried on the left arm with the lyre facing forward.

The doctor’s sword is mainly used at conferment ceremonies, always together with the doctoral hat. When wearing a doctoral hat, move in a dignified manner, for example, running is not appropriate.

The general dress code guidelines have been taken from the websites of Suomen Vaatturiliitto ry (Finnish Association of Tailors) and the Orders of the White Rose of Finland and the Lion of Finland.
