The Faculty of Education and Psychology is a research and education unit that, relying on strong traditions, bravely builds a better future.

The Faculty of Education and Psychology is one of the six faculties of the University of Jyväskylä

Teacher training is where the story of the University of Jyväskylä began in 1863. Following in the footsteps of the Teachers' Seminary, teaching and research in education has been one of the flagships of the university right up until today. Formed in 2017, the Faculty of Education and Psychology combines themes such as learning, growth and development.

The faculty aims to be at the leading edge of international research in its priority areas and to be a well-known and visible scientific community.

The teaching offered by the faculty gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in different theories, methods, and research areas, and to develop their skills in working with education and psychology.

The Faculty offers degree programmes in Special Education and Early Childhood Special Education, Class Teacher Education, Education and Adult Education, Guidance and Counselling, Psychology and Early Childhood Education.

RESEARCH PROFILE: Dynamics of learning and support across the life course

The Faculty is at the forefront of international research and a recognised and visible scientific community in its five research areas of strategic focus.

Its educational offer responds to the needs of societal and professional renewal and the challenges of internationalisation. Supporting student well-being and welfare, interaction and the development of multicultural and multilingual skills, as well as the principles of sustainability and responding to the challenges of digitalisation are strong threads in our educational profile.

In the period 2025-2028, the Faculty will be an even more attractive learning and professional community for national and international applicants, with a strong reputation and profile.

Internationalization Pathways

Internationalization is one of the multidisciplinary themes of our faculty. To develop and support the internationalization of our staff and students, we have compiled the document and tool Internationalization Pathways: Learning with and from Others.

The purpose of this document is to support the internationalization competency of the staff and students, and implementation of the university's internationalization strategy in both the curriculum and the everyday life of the university community. The goal is to strengthen internationalization as a natural part of the faculty's teaching and activities. The document describes how internationalization is reflected at different levels of the curriculum, such as in one's own attitudes, degree programmes, courses, and interdepartmental cooperation, as well as in local and global phenomena, and provides support for the development of these practices.

Faculty Council

The Faculty Council is a multi-member administrative body, elected every four years. The current term of office is 1.1.2022 - 31.12.2025.

The Faculty Council, under the leadership of the Dean, develops the activities of the Faculty as a whole in accordance with the University's operational and financial objectives and the University's and Faculty's strategy. The Faculty Council is made up of representatives of professors, other staff, and students. In addition, there are two external members of the Faculty Council.

Docents

According to Section 89 of the Universities Act, the title of docent may be awarded upon application to a person who has a thorough knowledge of their field, the ability to carry out independent scientific research work, as demonstrated by publications or otherwise, and good teaching skills.

The University of Jyväskylä instructs the applicant for the title of docent to consult with the main representative of the discipline/department head on matters related to the application for the title of docent; the need for the title of docent, the date of application for the title of docent, the field and its possible specification, and the assessment of teaching ability) before starting the application process. This will facilitate and speed up the process.
