In this JSBE seminar Professor Kirsi-Mari Kallio (University of Turku/Pori Unit) and Professor Janne T. Järvinen (University of Oulu) discuss how academics currently experience of the growing importance of external research funding in Finnish universities. External funding has become a performance metric used to evaluate academic excellence, career potential, and organizational success, but less is known about how academics themselves interpret, justify, and cope with this development. Drawing on Orders of Worth theory, the study explores the competing conceptions of value that academics mobilize when discussing the role of external funding and academic work.
