What do you know about Hungarian music education? What lies behind Kodaly, virtuosic instrument players and ambitious music teachers? Are there some secrets in the Hungarian music education system that make their musical skills world renowned? Come and learn about a perspective on Hungarian music education from assistant professor Tímea Szűcs (University of Debrecen).
The Hungarian education system provides opportunities to learn music from a very young age. In addition to music classes in general education, young people interested in music can continue their musical studies in primary art schools. At secondary music schools and university level, students can study at a professional level. However, alongside this educational structure, there are also institutions and programmes specifically for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. These are for students who, because of their socio-economic background, are not able to participate in primary art schools. These institutions are successful in reaching out to young people who want to learn music and who can also embark on a path to social advancement through music education.
The event will be chaired by professor Suvi Saarikallio (University of Jyväskylä).
The lecture is organized as Science for All event, by Jyväskylä Finnish-Hungarian Society (Jyväskylän Suomi-Unkari Seura) in collaboration with the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies, University of Jyväskylä. Participation is free of charge. The event is in English.
