Dissertation template
Dissertations in the JYU Dissertations series must be written using the series Word template. If you haven’t yet used it, please send your manuscript immediately to dissertations-osc@jyu.fi. Our publishing editors will guide you on transferring your work into the template.
Manuscript finalization and checklist
- Title. Ensure that the dissertation’s title is written identically in all places.
- Abstract length. The abstract (in both English and Finnish), including publication details and keywords, should be approximately 2,200 characters (maximum one page). You may write an unlimited-length summary at the end.
- Keywords. Add keywords at the end of each abstract. Please use official controlled vocabularies, such as YSO (General Finnish Ontology).
- Affiliations. Confirm that the advisers, pre-examiners, and opponent’s names and affiliations are accurate and up-to-date.
- Page size and margins. Ensure consistent page size and margins throughout. Do not refer to specific page numbers—refer instead to chapters, as pagination may shift during final layout.
- Citation style. You may use the established citation style of your field.
- Reference list. Include DOI numbers and hyperlinks in your references where applicable. Hyperlinks should be underlined and preferably colored blue.
- Tables and figures. Width: Ensure they do not exceed the text column width. Rotate larger items to landscape orientation, if necessary. Also make sure that the content remains readable if shrunk to B5 size (page size in printed dissertations).
Accessibility guidelines
- Tables. Do not insert tables as images. Instead, use Insert → Table in Word.
- Alternative texts (Alt Text). Provide descriptive alt text for all tables and figures to support screen reader users:
- Right-click the object → select View alt text.
- Accessible colors
- Confirm sufficient contrast between adjacent colors or between background and text in charts and figures.
