Learnwise AI-tutor pilot for degree students autumn 2026

What is the Learnwise pilot for degree students?

In this pilot, an AI tutor designed for students will be tested with degree students at the University of Jyväskylä in a few Moodle courses from October 1, 2026, to December 30, 2026. The pilot aims to determine how AI tools can support online learning, student guidance, and teachers’ pedagogical work in a responsible and appropriate manner. A decision on whether to continue using the tool will be made based on the research, user data, and feedback received from students and instructors. If the Learnwise AI tutor is available in your course, its use is entirely voluntary.

This pilot is being conducted as part of the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä AITOO project, but it is clearly more limited in scope: only one tool is being tested, and only in a few courses.

What is the AI tutor like?

If your course uses the AI tutor, you’ll find it listed as an activity in the course’s Moodle. When you open the activity, you’ll need to link your Moodle account and grant access to your account information. However, the AI does not process your personal data; it only accesses the part of Moodle where the tutor activity is located.

You can use the AI tutor to support your studies whenever it’s convenient for you. You can ask it for advice, request help understanding instructions, and get support for independent study, as well as tips on setting learning goals and creating a study schedule. It can also create practice exercises and exam questions, help you prepare for exams, and assist you in writing your assignments. However, it will not provide you with ready-made answers to your assignments.

The AI tutor retrieves information from the course’s Moodle platform and from instructions provided specifically for it. Remember, however, to approach the AI’s answers critically and verify the accuracy of the information, as AI can sometimes make mistakes.

The AI tutor does not replace the instructor or teacher: instructors will guide and support you in your studies as usual. The AI tutor is an additional resource that you can use to support your own learning whenever it benefits you.

How can you participate in the pilot in fall 2026?

Participating in the pilot means using the AI tutor to support your studies and taking part in surveys related to the use of AI tools. Your participation is extremely valuable to us, but it is entirely voluntary. If you do not wish to participate in the pilot, simply do not use the tutor in your studies.

You’ll have access to the AI tutor in the course’s Moodle learning environment. You can try out the tool at your own pace and according to your own needs.

During and at the end of the pilot, we’ll also ask you to complete surveys regarding the use of AI in your studies. Your feedback is extremely important to us, and we greatly appreciate it. A decision on whether to continue using the tool will be made based on research, user data, and feedback received from students and instructors.

Security

The pilot will be conducted safely and responsibly in accordance with the University of Jyväskylä’s guidelines on the use of AI-based applications. The use of the AI-based tools included in the pilot complies with applicable legislation, such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, EU 2016/679) and the Act on the Provision of Digital Services (Digital Services Act 306/2019, Section 6a). The Digital Services Act regulates the use of service automation in counseling. This means that the tools must operate transparently, provide appropriate guidance, and ensure that users have access to in-person service when necessary. In addition, the pilot provides valuable information as JYU prepares to comply with the requirements of the EU AI Regulation (EU 2024/1689), which will take effect in late 2027.

Conversations with the AI tutor are treated as usage data stored by the service. Please be aware that the course instructor can view anonymized summaries and reports of the tutor’s usage data. In addition, Learnwise pilot admin users can, if they wish, view the entire conversation with the tutor.

You can always contact your instructor if you have questions about the tutor’s technical functionality or its use during the course. The instructor can forward any questions to the pilot coordinators and administrators as needed.

Collection of Research Data Related to the Pilot

During the pilot, research data will be collected to determine what kinds of experiences and thoughts students have regarding the use of the tool during the course.

Participation in the research is voluntary and does not affect your completion of the course. Participation involves responding to anonymous surveys during the pilot. You will receive the survey from your instructor.

By participating in the study, you will help improve the use of AI tools in teaching and provide valuable information to support further development.

The study information sheet and privacy notice are always included with the survey.
