Databases and other electronic resources
You can access all the electronic resources through the library database JYKDOK. If you are using electronic resources on a computer connected to the Jyväskylä University network, you have access rights to all the resources. From outside the network please first login to JYKDOK using the same username and password as when you log into other university services. More info about e-resources and remote access.
Main Databases
Databases can be accessed through JYKDOK. Use the link "Database interface" to access any particular database. The most important databases for information technology are
- Scopus - a multidisciplinary citation database. Good coverage for both journal articles and conference articles in IT.
- ACM Digital Library - bibliographic information, abstracts, reviews, and the full-text for articles published in ACM periodicals and proceedings since its founding in 1947.
- IEEE Xplore - provides full-text access to IEEE transactions, journals, magazines and conference proceedings published since 1988 and all current IEEE Standards.
- Google Scholar - Google search for scholarly literature. Remote access: Staff can use university VPN to get access to full text articles when available. Students can use the LibKey Nomad -browser extension.
Electronic journals
Electronic full text journals available at Jyväskylä University can be accessed via JYKDOK. Search with the name of the journal and look at "Available online" to see which volumes are available.
If you need an article that is not available at Jyväskylä University in either electronic or printed form, you can usually get it through interlibrary loan. Information about interlibrary loans.
Electronic books
All electronic books can be accessed via JYKDOK.
If you want to browse e-book collections, you can also access the collections through JYKDOK. Important e-book collections include:
- Ebook Central - full-text books in multiple academic and general interest subject areas.
- Ebsco eBook Collection - full-text books in multiple academic and general interest subject areas.
- IEEE Xplore - has a small collection of e-books from Wiley-IEEE Press.
Reference Books
- Encyclopedia Britannica
- Oxford Reference Online - dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press.
- SAGE Research Methods Online - a database dedicated to research methods literature.
Dictionaries, Glossaries
- MOT Dictionaries – a variety of dictionaries through one user interface. MOT features comprehensive general dictionaries, large dictionaries for technical and commercial terms, as well as a selection of specialist dictionaries.
- Oxford English Dictionary
- Tepa – a term bank compiled and maintained by the Finnish Terminology Centre TSK. It contains special language terms and their definitions which are displayed as multilingual terminological entries.
Newspapers and magazines
- PressReader - provides access to current issues of international newspapers and magazines.
Patents and Standards
Patents:
- International classifications (WIPO).
- Espacenet - Esp@cenet is a free service on the internet provided by the European Patent Organisation through the EPO and the national offices of its members states.
- USPTO Web Patent Database - includes information about all US patents (including utility, design, reissue, plant patents and SIR documents) from the first patent issued in 1790 to the most recent issue week.
- Canadian Patents Database.
Standards:
- IEEE Xplore Standards - includes all current IEEE standards.
- World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Standards.
- Internet Engineering Task Force: Request for Comments
Printed resources
Printed books, journals, theses and dissertations completed at JYU can be found through the library database JYKDOK.
- Course books (B Kurssik) andthe research collection in information technology (B Tietotekn) are housed in Lähde-library. Legal deposit collection (Fennica) contains books and other material published in Finland and is housed in closed stacks. Items from the collection can be requested for use in the reading room. - Printed Graduate theses approved by the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems can be requested for reading room use. Most theses since 2005 have been made available in the Jyväskylä University Digital Archive JYX.
Managing references - Zotero
- Zotero is a bibliography and database manager that allows users to create their own personal database by uploading pdf-files or importing references from text files or online databases. The references can be used in writing papers and automatically formatting the bibliography for manuscripts.
