Orientation programme for international degree students

The Orientation Programme, organized jointly by the University of Jyväskylä and the Student Union, is designed to help new international students settle in and get to know each other, the University and the city of Jyväskylä. It is our way to say “Welcome”.

Orientation programme, autumn semester 2026

The orientation programme is designed to help new international students at the beginning of their studies and to get to know each other and the university. All new international students should take part in the programme, as it gives valuable information on studying at the University of Jyväskylä. 

During the autumn semester 2026, the orientation programmes will take place as follows:

In addition to the joint orientation sessions, make sure to attend the orientation programme organised by your faculty/degree programme. To check the programme of your faculty/degree programme, please select your degree programme in the drop-down menu below ("Further Instructions").

The locations for each session are marked in the programme. You can find the exact locations from the University campus below. Please note that changes to the programme are still possible.

Library tours 
Library tours for new international degree students will be held in the Lähde Library, from 25.8. to 4.9.2026. Tutors can book the most suitable time for their group from the booking calendar. The tour starts at the main lobby of the Lähde and lasts about half an hour.
Tuesday 1 September

New Students' Evening  5.30 pm to 8pm C1-C2

The University warmly welcomes all new students to our academic community. During the event, the Rector and all Vice Rectors personally welcome each new student with a handshake. At the end of the evening, participants can visit information desks in the main lobby and enjoy some coffee.

Opening Ceremony

Since the beginning of the teachers' seminar, the university has been celebrating the opening of the academic year. An academic procession starts the annual opening ceremony - and the Rector opens the new academic year with a timely speech. 

Dress code for the public and invited guests: casual.
Academic procession participants: dark suit and doctoral hat.
Other academic attire for those holding a doctorate at foreign universities.

12:30 p.m. Academic procession assembles in the main building

Welcome to the evening event of the Opening of the Academic Year 2026-2027!The evening event will feature Olavi Uusivirta, one of Finland’s most respected songwriters and live performers, together with Timo Kämäräinen.

DVV (Digital and Population Data Services Agency) pop-up in C building lobby

DVV staff will visit the campus in the autumn, so you do not need to book any separate appointments to the DVV office if you can visit the pop-up on those days. At the pop-up you will be able to apply for a Personal Finnish Identity Code (if you do not have one already), and apply for municipality of residence in Jyväskylä. Information about the exact time and place of the pop-up to be shared later via email to all students.
