A study by FIER follows the development of the Jyväskylä Higher Education Group
This multi-method, multi-perspective study will examine how the formation of the group proceeds in practice and how it impacts the core functions, management, services and organisational culture of the higher education institutions. Particular attention is paid to how the change is perceived by staff, students and other key stakeholders. The study will examine both the group’s strategic, planned dimension and how it is experienced in everyday life.
More specific research questions are:
- How does the group influence the core functions of JYU and Jamk as well as their management and service structures?
- How do the various stakeholders – management, staff, students and regional operators – perceive and interpret the higher education group?
- To what extent and in what ways have the objectives set for establishing the higher education group been met in relation to the experiences and daily activities of stakeholders such as staff and students?
The three-year research project is conducted jointly by FIER and JSBE
The project is being carried out jointly by FIER and the Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics (JSBE). FIER is responsible for the overall project, while JSBE is particularly responsible for the research section related to change communication. The research team comprises Research Director Jani Ursin, Postdoctoral Researcher Henna Juusola (Primary Investigator), Research Professor Terhi Nokkala and Senior Lecturer Markus Mykkänen. Additionally, the project engages in regular dialogue with the Strategic Steering Group of the higher education group.
The project will be carried out as a real-time longitudinal study from 2026 to 2028. The study draws on multiple methods, such as document analysis, interviews, focus group discussions and participatory observation as well as staff and student surveys.
The study’s proceedings and main findings will be communicated to the higher education community alongside the group’s other communications. In addition, the project findings will be published in the form of three to four scientific articles and will inform the group’s strategic development and decision-making processes.
The J2 project provides research-based support for establishing the Jyväskylä Higher Education Group, thereby strengthening the development of a shared vision across the entire higher education community.
Further information about the study can be found on the project website.
